After watching the Academy Award-winning movie “Spotlight” last winter, I wanted to read as much as I could about how the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team actually investigated the cases of child sex abuse by Catholic priests. I discovered “Betrayal: The Crisis in the Catholic Church,” which was written by the Globe’s Spotlight team.I thought I was getting a book about the Spotlight team and how it conducted its investigation into the Catholic church sex abuse scandal. But that really isn’t at all what this book is about. It’s about something much more important. It’s about what the Spotlight team uncovered during its year-long investigation.In the short space of about 280 pages, the Spotlight team presents thorough, detailed, and disturbing report on the results of its research. The Spotlight journalists pull no punches; their descriptions of events are frequently graphic and painful to read. They report on how, over a span of at least four decades, a surprisingly large number of Catholic priests in the Boston area preyed on children by enticing them and then sexually abusing them. Parents were unaware of what was happening to their children, but the church’s hierarchy was not. Instead of disciplining these abusive priests and turning them over to local authorities for prosecution, senior church officials in the local dioceses chose to cover up for them by transferring them from parish to parish, while at the same time paying off victims in order to buy their silence.Once I started reading “Betrayal,” I couldn’t put it down. (I finished reading it in about three hours.) I came away very glad I read it, but profoundly saddened and disturbed by what it contained.“Betrayal: The Crisis in the Catholic Church” is without question one of the best books about this difficult subject. Precise, succinct, and brutally honest, it earns my highest recommendation.

I was a teenager in 2002, when the Boston Globe blew the whistle on the Catholic Church sexual abuse scandals, but I remember the media fallout very well and the reactions that followed (a hilarious episode of South Park comes to mind). Spotlight was one of my favorite films of 2015, so when the opportunity arose to obtain the book via an Amazon Gold Box deal for Kindle, of course I downloaded it.First thing's first: Betrayal is NOT about Spotlight. Spotlight was an original screenplay based on the research and investigations of the Globe. Their work is the composition of this book. Betrayal provides a comprehensive look into the egregious and baffling oversights and cover-ups that occurred in the Boston archdiocese from as early as the 1960s and perpetuating into the turn of the new millennium. We are presented vivid and lurid portraits of the predator priests, their victims, their stories, and at the center of it all; Father Geoghan and Cardinal Law of Boston, who went from revered figures in the Church to national disgraces.I especially recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the background of Spotlight and didn't get enough substance from the Blu-ray extra features. Admittedly, Betrayal gives a bit better closure on our antagonists fates than Spotlight, but their denouement and resulting actions by the Church still carry a bit of reprehensible sting.For such an inclusive work, it is admittedly not an easy read, and the sordid details make it downright repulsive at times. The writing also has a tendency to be repetitive. There came a point where another story began, and I had a fair idea of how it was going to end up (badly). However, that's not to say Betrayal has bad prose; the writing is very good, though the reader should approach the story less as a narrative and more like an extended news article. Engaging to a certain degree, but a very important chronicle of a dark period of time for the Catholic Church.

Living in southeastern Massachusetts all my life as a Roman Catholic I was interested in reading this book to compare it to the movie of the same name that I had seen. The book is more descriptive and explains a great deal more than was able to be fit into the movie. I was very pleased that the authors included some reports of the former Fr. James Porter because I lived in the town where he abused children and that is actually where the original story came out that broke this whole thing wide open to the public. I actually knew one of the alter boys he molested and that poor guy drank himself to death around 50 years of age because he couldn't deal with his horrible memories. An incredible true story that needed to be told to the world. I'm sorry that Cardinal Bernard Law got out of prosecution in Boston. Also, at fault was the Fall River Diocese. Attleboro is part of the Fall River Diocese where these atrocities against trusting children were committed as well as other cities and towns in the diocese. Shame on the Catholic Church for shielding these perpetrators!
