Two disclaimers: 1) I haven't finished the book yet, but I give it five stars because it provides an Austin Music history that I haven't seen documented elsewhere. 2) I spent many nights at the AWHQ starting in 1975, so I am biased. This is a story that someone had to tell. Eddie is the right guy.Eddie provides some great behind the scenes tales about the various acts and all of the creative people involved in the Austin Music scene. He brings back memories of some fantastic live shows from a unique period. The Armadillo presented an eclectic lineup that will never be reproduced (Alvin Crowe opening for Bruce Springsteen?), Captain Beefheart, Commander Cody, Freddie King, Balcones Fault, etc.The book also has some historic images. I may have to buy a print copy to get a better look than my Kindle presents.Bottom line is this book fills a void that needed to be filled.
I was a student at Southwest Texas State University from 1970-1972 and the University of Texas from 1972-1975 and I spent about 100 night at the Armadillo World Headquarters. In the early 1970's major rock groups did not play Austin preferring to play to larger audiences in Dallas and Houston. The AWH filled a big need at the time, a chance to see really good groups perform at very low ticket prices. Over the years I saw Freddy King, Jo Jo Gunne, J Geils Band, Frampton's Camel, Head East, Fanny, Charlie Daniels and the Marshall Tucker Band among many others. But my favorite was Freddy King, I tried to see him at least once every time he played the AWH and I was never disappointed. Always a great show. Freddy used to say that the AWH was the house that Freddy built. And with the huge crowds he would draw he was probably not far off.So when I first heard of a book about the history of the Armadillo World Headquarters I bought it on Amazon sight unseen. And what a great book it is. I could nitpick and say I wish there were more about the interaction with the different groups and less about the money woes of keeping the AWH open but it would just be nitpicking. As a concert poster collector I really enjoyed the images of the various posters and the pictures of the inside of the AWH during the different concerts. There are many pictures and they alone are worth the price of the book. The book talks about the different problems that security would encounter but I never saw any fights or problems when I was there. It was a very mellow crowd just enjoying the music. All in all a great book about one of the great music halls in the USA, on par with the Grande Ballroom and the Fillmore East and West. If you ever spent any time at the AWH or have an interest in the great music clubs of that era give this book a read. You won't be disappointed.
Interesting and honest recount of what went on at the Armadillo World Headquarters live music venue in Austin, Tx., from the stark reality of the business side of music, to the reality of working with drug and alcohol ridden musicians. The Armadillo WQ represents one of the most important clubs and music era in Texas music history. The music was ridiculously good, the songwriters were the best in the nation, the performances were over the top. Good stories, great old pictures and posters, and over all a valiant effort of retelling the story of one of the greatest live music venues ever to exist. Only complaint is that it should have been written 25 years ago to ensure a more proper legacy.
A wonderful book, especially for me since I was there and saw many great acts. A must read for anyone who loves Austin, Texas, and the behind the scenes of one of THE GREATEST music venues in the Lone Star State! Two thumbs up to Eddie Wilson & Jesse Sublett for one great read!
If you want to understand how the Austin music scene really lifted off this is a must read. Hippes, "red-neck" cowboys, weed and Lone Star beer all under one roof. Whoda thought........! Eddie Wilson is my hero. I live in Austin and am now on a mission to find the spot where Eddie took that pee. Highly recommended for any "boomer" who into 70's rock and country.
Super tedious boring read.Lots of information and some interesting photos as well as,great prints of a handful of the excellent posters from the era. However if your not interested in how Eddie Wilson invented the current state of the Austin music scene then this might not be for you.The single best page was, actually written by the owner of the Vulcan Gas Works .Which would almost certainly be a more interesting and accessible read. And the misinformation about the poster art world is astounding. REASEARCH BOYS!Dave Marsh should be ashamed
What an excellent book detailing the rollercoaster history of this (in)famous music venue. Told by the originator himself. Great stories about not just the performers, but the faces behind the scenes and the faces behind the venue's classic poster art. There are dozens of images of concert posters from Springsteen, Zappa, Charlie Daniels, Commander Cody, etc). Long live the 'Dillo!
I bought this book as a gift for my husband.. a native Texan. If you rememver ..and love the Austin music scene before the city sold out to sky scrapers and big money.. This is the book for you.
