I read this literally immediately after finishing the first book, "Where Children Run." It was as painful and disturbing to read about the childhood events as the first one, and all the more disheartening to see how they were affected as adults -- not only because of the trauma, but because of the reputation that they unfairly gained due to the monster that was their stepfather. The story begins with the twins being investigated as suspects (for no reason!) and interrogated by RCMP over the murder of someone 20 years prior. Excellently interwoven with the sections of the interrogation are flash backs and memories and stories of the past that lead up to their acquaintance with the murdered man, and also show how unfairly they were depicted as adults as a result of things they didn't even do as kids.I was disappointed that there was not more follow-up on the result of the investigation, except at the end of the book when the author mentions that an arrest was finally made 30 years after the man's disappearance. An internet search shows that it was one of the children's own kids (nephew to the twins, son of the brother who was killed in a 1979 plane crash) who has been charged, but this was not mentioned in the book. I don't know what happened as a result of that -- the trial was supposed to be in 2017 -- but perhaps a third book would be in order to finally absolve the twins, answer the "why", and lay to rest the decades of accusations and reputation-smearing of the twins, that was just insult on top of injury. I would love to see this most-excellent author wrap up the story.
I have read all of Karen Emilson's books and they are all outstanding, I love her writing! In this book she brings us up to date on the Pishchke children but follows David and Dennis more closely. Both of them led a successful life after the horrors of their childhood. I just wish they had had the opportunity to really reach their potential, there is just no limit to what they could have achieved, they were naturally gifted in art but their mother hid a letter to David giving him a full scholarship to art school, imagine how that would have changed his life. I think the hard physical labor and the physical abuse they suffered caused David's early death. Another life stolen by Domka and Caroline! If you read nothing this year please read all of Ms Emilson's books and bring them to your book clubs as they wonderful! To Dennis, I am glad you are in a good place in your life but I know you miss your brothers terribly,my heart goes out to you.
Over the past years I have read numerous books on child abuse. I am always amazed how each child survived such horrible torture. Of all the books this one has touched my heart the most. It has made public the devastating aftermath abuse caused and I'm grateful to those individuals who had the courage to tell their stories to bring awareness to abuse.
Where Children Run was a fantastic book, and its sequel was almost as good. A truly heartbreaking, yet hopeful, story which has been beautifully written. Easy to read and keeps you captivated, I would recommend this book to anyone.
I totally immersed myself in the lives of the twins and all the people around them.... loved both books â¤ï¸ highly recommend it.
Great sequel to the first book. Easy to read, wish there were Pictures. Karen does a great job in covering David's life.
I love that the author went on to write a sequel to let us know what happened to Dennis and David after they escaped the horrendous abuse they endured for so many years. It broke my heart that after everything they went through the community did their own share of abuse to these men with all of their accusations. Great read I recommend!
From page one I could not put the book down. Karen did an excellent job sharing the lives of Dennis and David.
