Mr. Kloos is among the best sci fi writers today and undoubtedly the very best in military sci fi. A trademark of Mr. Kloos's writing is his attention to detail about the military ethos, commands, accuracy about military life, ranks, vernacular, etc. But this short story has some glaring errors. Afghanistan is not in the Middle East. The average reader may not know that but a writer, who surely also reads a great deal, should know that and some readers do know that Afghanistan not next to Lebanon. In the story, early on, Sergeant Decker has a conflict with a, 'Master Sergeant', and Sergeant Decker refers to him as, 'Top'. Of course, 'Top', is slang for, 'First Sergeant'. While a Master Sergeant and a First Sergeant are both E-8's, they are not the same, not the same at all. Most Master Sergeants are in a staff or specialist position and are usually more often described as, 'rotund', rather than, 'burly'. Occasionally, someone may refer to a Master Sergeant out of respect and familiarity as 'top', but those feelings certainly are not present in this encounter. More realistically, that, 'Master Sergeant', should have been referred to through out the story as, 'First Sergeant'. I find it hard to believe that the author of the excellent Frontline Series would make such glaring mistake in such a short story. I hope that Mr. Kloos is not turning to ghostwriters already.
Kloos is a talented writer whose work feels original and character-driven. This short story is really well done, and gives you a glimpse of what could definitely be a much longer story. To the reviewer who wonders “why would the soldiers serve with people they don’t like?†History shows how any minority is down-trodden, even when serving in wartime. In the US, just look at how the military treated Blacks and kept the units segregated even after WW2, or women serving today. Science fiction should always put a mirror up to our cultures and show how distorted our reality really is. All of his work is top notch.
I saw the netflix love death and robots adaptation of this short history and it was very good then I needed to read the original and it was very good. now I am very curious about other Marko Kloss work
Over too soon though. "Marko knows military", as he should, and it shows. We are always who we first were, whatever we later become. A parallel for this story if you will. Can't wait for his next full length book.
Kloos tells a right, significant story. His characters are well structured and complex. I am thoroughly impressed with his work.
Short stories are tuff. Kloss nails this one. Smell is the most atavistic sense. Remember that, smell is primitive and basic
Marko Kloos has deviated from the space warfare genre but good writers can always spin a good tale. I look forward to more of this story.
An intriguing and captivating take by an accomplished storyteller. I really like the world building and characters, and would love to see more in this storyline.
