I just received this book and have only had time to thumb through it, but I am so impressed with the structure, illustrations, robust information, and beauty of this book. The value far exceeds what the cost would imply. I know I will spend hours with this book and think it is a valuable nucleus to my home library, which weighs heavily towards history. It is just incredible!

Personal backstory:-I just purchased this for my homeschooling brother. I haven't, and likely won't read it, as I'm not a history person myself, but it is my brother's favorite subject. And of course, when you see the word "Smithsonian", you expect high quality and educational value. And maybe even information you can't find anywhere else.Pros:-I decided to write a review anyway, because the proportions and design alone, makes it worth the money. The cover is absolutely GORGEOUS. The cover picture, and title letters, as well as the spinal lettering and logos, are a glossy gold. Not brown, like you may interpret from the Amazon picture. And maybe this is due to the fact that I'm currently looking at it with mild sunlight shining through my window, but the picture doesn't do justice to just how beautiful this book really is. Like I said, SHINY, GOLD. Even if you're not a history person, this book will tempt you to explore what treasures lie inside.-You'll be the envy of any history lover who comes over-Would make a beautiful and sophisticated display piece.Cons (really just concerns):-Make sure you're getting this for an older kid (like 11+), who actually enjoys history, if not for an adult, or yourself. I leafed through a couple of pages, and they all seem packed with detail. Also, because of the size being almost 1 foot by 1 foot, and 440 pages long, this thing is BIG and heavy, and could possibly intimidate younger academics.I might have my brother review the content of the book, once he's read a fair amount.

I am a history buff, so when I saw the preorder for this, I got really excited. I also love maps. Finally, an up-to-date book that combines both aspects: history and maps. The maps are large and vivid without the book being too big. This is a great reference when reading different historical books. My only wish is that the maps had a mileage scale so distances could be easily judged. This book, in my opinion deserves all five stars. Well done everyone involved in the creation of this book!

The book is beautiful, full of information and is a pleasure to look at.However a book of maps should include for each map a north point if it makes sense, a scale, even an approximate one, and identification of the lines of latitude and longitude, 30 degrees, 50 degrees, whatever it is.That none of the maps in this book provide such basic information is a disgrace to cartography.

I bought this book as a gift for my 13yo son and am thrilled with it. So thrilled, in fact, that before wrapping it my husband and I both spent a couple days poring icee it while the kids were at school. Great way to learn history, drawn connections over time, and see not just snapshots in time, but trends and the natural geographic manner in which history takes place. The fact that it’s absolutely stunning as a book means that I won’t be bugging my son to put his books away, this one he can happily leave out in the family room for everyone to enjoy. Highly recommend.

A great compilation history. It’s going take me a long time to read and digest the content of this very large beautiful book.

I've only owned the book for a few minutes and I just went through the reviews written, just 5 so far and all mention how beautiful the book is. It is indeed a beautiful book. It is a large book as well but there is so much detail within the pages.This might be the book I am most proud of owning.

I've always loved finding older maps, seeing the different boarders and finding the history behind it, this book does all the work for you! A very thorough but not overly scholarly/dry run through the history of the civilized world, Its checking all the boxes! I'm like a kid in a candy shop! I've purchased 2 more copies to give as gifts because everyone deserves the splendor and awe that this book unfurls at your fingertips!
