Review

"History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it." (The D.O.C.)"Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book." (Xzibit)"Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths." (Leslie “Big Lez” Segar)"This book is a masterclass that takes the reader through the meager beginnings of gangster rap’s origins all the way to its position today as rap’s most important and impactful subgenre. Soren’s knowledge of the topic is seen throughout each page and the artists’ trust in him is shown throughout thoughtful anecdotes and recollections. A highly recommended book for anyone who has a cursory interest in those who trailblazed and popularized the art. You’ll leave with a much deeper appreciation for its impact and influence." (Jonathan Abrams New York Times Bestselling author of All the Pieces Matter and Boys Among Men)

He takes us to the midwest with acts like Crucial Conflict from Chicago, and the south with the Rap-A-Lot, No Limit & Cash Money labels. If you want to learn the history of gangster rap or just brush up on your current knowledge check this out. A MUST OWN

This book is a masterclass that takes the reader through the meager beginnings of gangster rap’s origins all the way to its position today as rap’s most important and impactful subgenre. Soren’s knowledge of the topic is seen throughout each page and the artists’ trust in him is shown throughout thoughtful anecdotes and recollections. Very few people are true craftsman in language and have the ability to be a historian, fan and advocate quite like Soren. I was moved and mesmerized by his perspective, insight and factual knowledge about a subject that many will speak to at the surface level but have very little first hand data and info on! Soren is an encyclopedia of culture, music and history! In his new book”The History of Gangster Rap”, Soren takes us on a journey of not only the people and places that make this subset of music so special but also the lyrics, their meaning and the key details that only come when you seek the truth, and are a real lover of the music and respect the people! Job well done!!!

I highly recommend The History of Gangsta Rap! It blends the intriguing story of an incredible sub-genre of the culture, and uses world history and voices from every region of the country to add perspective and balance. The author makes it impossible to simply write off so-called gangsta rap as a base product of black rage, violence or hyper-sexuality. He successfully grounds the story in history, holding the United States government accountable for facilitating the despair that birthed it, and retrospectively uniting, in spirit if nothing else, the gladiators who pushed it to the fore. Salute, Soren Baker!

Even though Soren baker did not grow up in the poverty ridden streets of south central CA or south pilly PA his unwavering passion and detail account of the culture of gangster rap makes that all the more unimportant. This book is a great read even for avid historians who may not be huge fans of gangster rap because it talks about the struggle of Americas underprivileged communities during the rise of the crack epidemic of the 80s that plagued them. Soren has earned so much respect in the hip hop community and this is just a testament to his outstanding work and dedication. He has been co-signed by major hip hop artists such as snoop-dog, tech nine, ice cube, and Schoolly D - all who are featured in this book. You won’t regret purchasing this mind blowing account of the history of gangster rap.

Serious fans of rap music have been reading Soren Baker for years and know him as one of the most respected journalists in the industry. "The History of Gangster Rap" is well written, with fascinating interviews and insights. A must read for all hip hop fans. I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.

As someone who has been teaching courses on hip-hop at the University of Arizona for many years now, it's not always easy to find books that are insightful, accessible, and engaging all at once. Soren Baker's book is an exception, a thorough and entertaining study of some of the key figures and moments in hip-hop. Written in clear and accessible prose, with colorful and revealing photos, this study of gangster rap sheds light on the street knowledge that this sub-genre of hip-hop has preached. Baker does a fine job in combining musical analysis, social theory, and biographical details in the lives, lyrics and sonic qualities of gangster rap, past and present.

Soren Baker has earned respect in the world of music journalism as an orator of culture and The History of Gangster Rap is more than a book documenting Gangster Rap. It's a textbook for those interested in understanding a part of American art and history.

Some say he’s half man half fish, others say he’s more of a seventy/thirty split. Either way he’s a fishy bastard.
