The I Quit Sugar Cookbook is action-packed with recipes! (306 recipes in those 376 pages! ;P ) Sarah seems like such a fun and awesome person to be around, and that's something that's definitely reflected in every page of this book. I love that she advocates for no waste and sustainable living, which concurrently helps with saving money! She even includes a section on alternative uses for sugar (face scrubs, removing stains, keeping flowers alive...) so that it doesn't get wasted! One of her kitchen philosophies is to start where you are! (Tis something I like to tell my patients as well!)The back of the book includes a neat little shopping list of the things she keeps on hand, as well as recipe substitutes/fixes, a guide to sugar and safe sweeteners, a 10-day dinner plan requiring only 3 cook-ups, a "leftovers index" for if you have certain ingredients you want to use up, as well as an actual index!I love the photography and the whimsical nature of this cookbook! Each recipe includes a short intro, the serving size, ingredient list, instructions, and if applicable/pertinent, little tips/tricks, as well as what you can use the leftover ingredients for!Disclaimer: I received this free of charge in exchange for an honest review. As always, all thoughts/opinions are mine and mine alone!
I wanted to like this book, and I did, in theory. My ideal self, the one who stores things in glass jars and pretty containers and raises backyard chickens loved it, but it's just too overwhelming and unrealistic for the real version of me. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone not already dedicating a large amount of time and energy to labor intensive food prep practices. From making your own mayo, stocks and cheeses to "activating" your own nuts and seeds. Yeah, no. I know myself well enough to know that's never going to happen. And if by chance I do "activate my nuts", it likely wouldn't be something I'd sustain long term. I'm giving this 2 stars because it's a pretty-to-look-at book and I appreciate the environmental tips, but other than that, it's just not for me. I understand that stepping down off of sugar requires a certain level of change to how you prepare and plan meals, but I need the I Quit Sugar Cookbook LITE version- you know, the version for people still trying to eat the bag of spinach before it goes slimy.
So here's the thing...I love the recipes in this book. I love the blog I Quit Sugar and the concept. I'm certain if I purchased the hardcopy of the book, I would be giving it 5 starts. Unfortunately, the kindle version doesn't work so well on either the ipad or the laptop. The pages don't fit onto the screen as they should - they stagger and take a while to load. It's extremely difficult to read the kindle version I purchased and to follow a recipe. It's like the pages were scanned in and then uploaded onto a kindle format - it just doesn't work. Get the hard copy and you'll love it.
My daughter has lost weight, increased energy, even her skin and hair look vibrant. I also want to begin this eating style and, the bonus of the products used, is that many are easily available in large food markets or on Amazon. Once you begin to use many of the ingredients on this diet you will continue to use them for their flavor, quality and healthiness even if you return to your old way of eating.
First of all the photography is beautiful! I really learned so much about food prep and proper storage from this book. I have been cooking for years and am inspired when I find out new things. The recipes are definitely different and interesting. If you are cutting out sugar, then it is for you. I made her cauliflower popcorn last week and hubby loved it so much! He picked up two heads fo cauliflower so I can make more! Buy the book version!
Many of my concerns about this diet are addressed in other people's reviews for I Quit Sugar 8 week detox book: warnings about most whole fruits, usage of brown rice syrup, not a comprehensive program, etc.A lot of the recipes look great and I love the idea of cutting out processed foods of any kind, but I cannot see this working very well in a family with small children. Kids are notoriously picky eaters for the most part. The reality of getting children to like and eat these foods is so very different than the adorable photo of Wilson's niece and nephew helping make the healthy breakfast pictured in the book. Not only that, but now your food prep is way longer than ever before if you want to make any of the recipes because you need to make your own whey and almond meal and track down hard-to-find items that all of the recipes are built on. And because no one else in your family wants to eat most of this stuff (despite the fact that much of it is yummy) now you have even more food to prepare and cook. This lifestyle works for Wilson because she has no children and if she did, they would start life eating this way...this lifestyle is a full time job if you have a family....not to mention crazy expensive. california doesn't discount your dinged up fruits and veggies. It is a beautiful book and I plan to incorporate changes that are sustainable whenever possible, but as a whole diet overhaul for the fam, it is unrealistic. We all can make healthier choices for our families, but not all of us have time to make 2 of every meal.
I love this book! I actually decided to order my own after heisting a friend's copy to make a bunch of the recipes. They're easy to follow, tasty, super healthy, and work with many dietary restrictions. And Sarah has lots of fun anecdotes and pictures to go along with many of the recipes. Even if you're not all on board with quitting sugar, give this book a try and enjoy many fun, new cooking ideas!
