I bought the atlas for maps, not primer in earth science. It is heavy, unwieldy and puts too much emphasis on space photos and relief maps. Rand-McNally did a better job with their Reader's Atlas in 1950. I am disappointed. Too much extraneous matter and too few detailed maps. Why doesn't someone publish a Readers Atlas modeled on the one mentioned above. I don't mean a Road Atlas. just an up-to-date detailed set of geographic maps.
I had a great Rand McNally atlas that is getting old and falling apart. I have been looking for a really good atlas and have not had luck until I found the NEW CONCISE WORLD ATLAS. This is amazing book at an amazingly low price. It's a heavy hardcover book with nearly 200 pages of pictures and maps plus 90 pages or so INDEX. Find just about any city in the world. I took a picture using a ruler to reference the size.I love to travel and also look for places I read about on an atlas. When I plan a trip to Spain, I like to look at an atlas to get an idea of where Madrid is in relation to Barcelona. I have had trouble finding good maps on the internet so I needed a great and detailed atlas in book form. I was floored as to how heavy this book is and how colorful the pictures and maps are. At the beginning are aerial images of cities and areas around the world. Beautiful pictures though probably not useful beyond their visual appeal. My picture shows the aerial view of Rome, Italy. There is also a world statistics section in the front.Since this atlas is incredibly detailed, it is also a bit "busy" and confusing. There is too much information and a map can be hard to view if all you really care about are countries and cities. Color coded areas sometimes make finding a city hard. Mountain ranges, deserts, rivers, major roads, international boundaries and internal boundaries and so much more can be overwhelming. All the various lines are distracting. I don't know what the internal borders are for countries though I see that US states are distinguished by the internal borders code.I love this atlas and know I will use it regularly. Again, the extreme detail can be overwhelming at times but this truly is one amazing atlas
This atlas is a huge value when compared to the price of other hard bound issues. I am an Amateur Radio Operator and I wanted this reference to find distant locations I have contacted. I simply find the location in the index. It tells me the page and grid reference. In a couple of minutes, I am looking at it on a map. The detail is excellent.
This is a really wonderful Atlas. I would have expected to pay a great deal more for a volume of this quality. I was a Navy Quartermaster and a lot of our charts were not of this good quality. What a bargain.
I love, love, love, maps. With all the things going on in the world, I decided I needed a world atlas to keep up with it all!! Great and have used it almost daily.
The pictures and illustrations are good, but it can be hard to read the names of the cities, town, rivers, and mountain ranges against their backgrounds. And the names are usually in their foreign versions, which doesn't make it any easier.
Bought this as a coffee table book and for general, occasional reading. It's absolutely thorough, all the maps are extremely detailed and a huge index that won't miss anything you look for. Mighty impressed with the hard-binding and paper quality, totally worth its weight for the price. Best of all are the satellite images and tidbits of select cities. I'm a satisfied buyer.
Very Disappointed! I ordered this item as a gift and the dust cover of the book was BADLY scuffed, scratched and creased. It appears to be used or poorly handled and I ordered and paid for new! I would never have purchased the atlas in such poor condition. As to the content of the Atlas itself, it is a lovely volume with full beautiful maps.
